Kiefer was the son and grandson of a potter and started training in his father's studio. Despite his Alsatian roots, he was influenced by the Far East aesthetic and did research on the colored effects of celadons and the flaming reds of copper. He was at Sѐvres between 1936 and 1947. All of his pieces are in porcellaneous stoneware, a mixture perfected by Decoeur, and were fired at high temperature.
